Video Transcript
Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well.
Welcome to this new video where we'll look at a French expression together in just a few minutes. Today, we're going to look at the expression "ca va sans dire."
Before we start, if you need them, remember to turn on the French or English subtitles. If the video is too fast or too slow for you, don't forget that YouTube lets you adjust the playback speed.
"Ca va sans dire" - what does it mean?
"Ca va sans dire" simply means that something is obvious. You don't even need to say it - "ca va sans dire." It means that something is so obvious it's not even worth using your breath to say it. It goes without saying.
For example, if I'm at a restaurant and the person I'm with and I are both big foodies who love eating, I might ask "shall we get dessert?"
And the person will very likely answer "ca va sans dire" - meaning it's obvious that we're getting dessert.
It's implied, it's such an obvious question because it goes without saying.
Another example. Say you send your wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, or a friend to the grocery store and you asked them to get milk.
When they come back, if you ask "did you get milk?"
They'll answer "ca va sans dire" - that was the main reason they went shopping in the first place. So it means it's obvious that they got it.
That's it for today. It was a very short video to introduce you to this expression.
I hope you liked this expression and that you'll be able to use it yourself too.
See you very soon, and don't forget to like the video if you enjoyed it.
A bientot!
