Learn French in 2 Minutes - French Idiom: Boire des coups

Video Transcript

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well.

Today I'm back with a new video about a French expression.

The expression we're going to look at today is quite informal. It's "boire des coups."

Cheers!

"Boire des coups" is simply an expression that means to have a drink or to have some drinks.

It's when you're going to spend a nice, enjoyable moment with friends or family, and you're going to have some drinks - it could be a soda, a beer, some wine.

The idea is just to spend time together, often at a bar - that's usually where you "boire des coups." But it could be at your place, at an apartment, at a friend's place, at your partner's place. The idea is to have a good time, a moment of sharing. Let me give you two examples to help you understand the expression and be able to use it yourself. For example, if I ask a colleague what they did this weekend.

They could answer: "I didn't do much. I just went out to have some drinks (boire des coups) with friends." Another example would be if someone sends me a message asking if I'm available. I could reply: "No, I'm recording a YouTube video right now, but if you want, we can meet up afterwards to have some drinks (boire des coups) at the little bar near my place." That's it for today. It was a short one.

I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a new expression. If you liked it, don't forget to give the video a thumbs up. And if you're new here, subscribe to the channel so you don't miss any videos. See you very soon, and have a great day!
