Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well. I'm back with a new video in the format of a French expression in a few minutes. Before we begin, remember to turn on French subtitles if you need them to better understand the video. The expression we're going to look at today is "un coup dur." There are many French expressions with the word "coup." We've already covered "avoir un coup de mou" - I'll put the link to that video above if you haven't seen it yet.
Coming back to "avoir un coup dur" - it's an expression that isn't very cheerful. It's quite a negative expression. When you say you're having "un coup dur," it means you're going through a difficult time, a tough ordeal. It's a really bad period. Something happens to you that is truly unpleasant, not at all happy or joyful. Something sad happens. You could say, for example, that to get through life's "coups durs" (hardships), you need to stay very positive.
"Un coup dur" could be the death of a loved one, losing your job, failing an exam, or a romantic breakup. A difficulty that hits you. A hardship. Let me give you some examples to help you better understand the expression and, most importantly, so you can use it yourself when speaking French.
Here's a first example. I was fired from my job last March. It was a real "coup dur" for me. It took me several months to recover. Here's a second example. The Belgian football team was eliminated from the World Cup by France. It was really "un coup dur" for the Belgians, who already saw themselves in the World Cup final. That's it for this expression "avoir un coup dur."
