Learn French in 2 Minutes - French Idiom: C'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite

Video Transcript

Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well.

Welcome to this short video format where we look at a French expression each time.

Today, we're going to look at the expression "c'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite" (it's the hospital making fun of charity).

Before we begin, remember to turn on the French subtitles.

They'll help you understand better and remember all the new words and everything we'll cover in this video.

"C'est l'hopital qui se fout de la charite" or "c'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite."

If you say "c'est l'hopital qui se fout de la charite," the expression is very, very informal, whereas "c'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite" can be used in more contexts.

But what does this expression mean?

When you use it, you're saying to someone who is criticizing you or pointing out one of your flaws that they themselves have the same flaw or are also doing something wrong. It's the equivalent of the English "pot calling the kettle black."

You'll definitely understand better with some examples.

For instance, if I ate all the chips at home and someone calls me out on it - say my husband criticizes me, saying "you ate all the chips."

I could respond, "c'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite" - you ate all my yogurts!

You see, someone is criticizing me, but I think they're no better than me.

They make the same mistakes as I do, so I'll say "c'est l'hopital qui se moque de la charite." Here's another example.

For instance, at work, I could say:

My boss criticizes me for taking too long a lunch break, even though I only take one hour. I could say "c'est vraiment l'hopital qui se fout de la charite."

He leaves every day at noon and doesn't come back until 2 PM.

He takes twice as long. "C'est l'hopital qui se fout de la charite."

So he's criticizing me for something he does himself, or even worse.

And that's it for today's expression.

I hope you enjoyed this video. If you did, don't forget to give it a thumbs up and make sure to subscribe to the channel.

It helps me a lot and allows me to make more videos.
