LEARN FRENCH IN 2 MINUTES - French idiom : Au pif

Transcript of the video

Hello everyone, welcome to this new video where we will see a French expression in a few minutes.

Before you start, pick three cards at random.

Didn't you understand what I asked you? That's the expression we're going to see today: au pif.

Au pif is an expression meaning at random.

When I ask you to pick three cards at random, I'm asking you to pick three cards blind, at complete random, at random.

This expression, it can also mean approximately.

So it's not really by chance, but it's really at a glance.

We evaluate without really knowing, for example, I could ask you: you think the distance between the library and me is how much?

You could answer me at random 3 meters.

That means it's pretty approximate, you don't really know, but you say a bit randomly like that, as it seems to you. But of course, you don't have meters to measure with.

For example, you can also use this expression in cooking. If you don't have scales to weigh the ingredients, you're going to make a recipe that's a bit haphazard. You're going to say, well, I didn't have any scales, so I just threw in the sugar, flour and milk as I saw fit. I did the best I could without really being able to measure. As you can see, "au pif" can really mean "at random", i.e. blind.

Or a little approximately, by giving you as I thought. That's it for today, for this expression. I hope you've understood it. If there are any other expressions you'd like me to explain, don't hesitate to comment. If you especially liked this video, remember to put a little like. And if you're new to the channel, subscribe so you don't miss any of my videos. See you very, very soon.
