Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well.
Today, we're going to look at a French expression together in just a few minutes.
Before we begin, feel free to turn on the French or English subtitles if you need them. If I'm speaking too fast or too slowly, you can always speed up or slow down the video.
Today, we're going to look at the expression "mine de rien." A subscriber asked me what this expression means in the comments, so we're going to look at it together today because it's an expression that can be useful for everyone.
"Mine de rien" simply means without seeming like it, as if nothing happened. You use it when something turns out to be different from what you expected. "Mine" here refers to appearance or demeanor.
This expression is used to convey that appearances can be deceiving, that the outcome is different from what you anticipated. You might have thought not, but actually, yes.
Let me give you some examples - they'll really help you understand better.
For instance, if I had barely studied for my French exam and still scored 16 out of 20, I could say: I had barely studied for my exam, but "mine de rien," I got 16 out of 20.
It's a result you wouldn't necessarily have expected. Here's another example. If it's winter, I'm at home, and it looks cold outside.
But when I go out, there's actually some sun. So I could say "mine de rien," there's actually quite a bit of sunshine. Or even, "mine de rien," there's a lot of sun despite the clouds - I might actually get a sunburn.
And finally, here's one last example. Wow! You're already married with two kids. "Mine de rien," it's already been 10 years since I started dating Thibault. Time flies.
So, without realizing it, time passed quickly.
That's it for today. I hope you understood this expression "mine de rien" well.
Feel free to put other examples and situations using this expression in the comments to show me you've understood it.
If you liked the video, as always, don't forget to give it a thumbs up. It really means a lot to me. And if you're new here, subscribe so you don't miss any of my videos.
