0:00Hello and welcome to the HelloFrench press review.
0:03The podcast that immerses you in the news of the week. To enable you to improve your French.
0:10On the front page for this week, from January 19 to 25, 2020.
0:14Coronavirus: 54 dead and nearly 1,300 cases. The Chinese metropolis of Wuhan
0:20quarantined. In Paraguay, nearly 80 prisoners escape through a tunnel.
0:26Donald Trump, the first US president to participate in an anti-abortion march.
0:31Great Britain: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle renounce their royal titles.
0:37Coronavirus epidemic in China. No longer anyone across the Rhine leaves the city of Wuhan.
0:42The Chinese metropolis was quarantined even before the 11
0:46million inhabitants could organize their eventual departure.
0:50A decision taken by the authorities this Thursday, January 23,
0:53as the epidemic begins to spread to the rest of the world.
0:57Several cases have in fact been detected outside China, including three cases in France,
1:01five in Thailand, four cases in Australia, three cases in Japan, three cases in Malaysia,
1:07three cases in Singapore, three cases in Taiwan, two cases in the United States,
1:12two cases in South Korea, two cases in Vietnam and one case in Nepal.
1:17Residents could still leave the city by car this Thursday morning. Police officers, however, stopped
1:23the vehicles to take the temperature of the passengers. The wearing of a mask has also been imposed
1:28by the town hall to prevent the spread of the virus within the metropolis.
1:34The virus has already killed 54
1:36people and 1,300 cases have been detected, including 237 critical cases.
1:42A very sad Chinese New Year this year and canceled festivities in the city of Wuhan.
1:49An escape worthy of an action movie.
1:51In Paraguay, 80 prisoners escaped Sunday from a prison via a tunnel.
1:56Most of these prisoners are part of the largest Brazilian drug and arms smuggling gang,
2:01with the help of a prison guard. The tunnel is 25 meters long and has been fitted with lighting.
2:08The tunnel, whose construction certainly took several weeks,
2:12leads directly from the sanitary facilities of the prison to the shelter of the guard.
2:16The authorities removed the prison director from office and arrested dozens of guards.
2:22The fugitives have still not been spotted. Five vans in which some fugitives were transported
2:29were found set on fire after the Brazilian border.
2:33Brazil has reinforced its security to capture them. This Friday in the United States,
2:38Donald Trump is the first president to oppose abortion by participating in a March for Life.
2:44A great honor, according to the president.
2:47Yet twenty years ago, the businessman positioned himself as close
2:51to a few months before the American elections. The billionaire is making a 360-degree
2:56turn to become the most anti-abortion president in history. Meanwhile, the president's
3:03impeachment trial is still ongoing in the Senate.
3:06This follows the House of Representatives vote in December,
3:10which impeached Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstructing Congress. A few days before Brexit,
3:16Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and little Archie renounce their royal titles.
3:21Earlier this month, the couple had already announced that they were
3:24stepping down from their role in the royal family.
3:27Harry and Meghan therefore decide to take their independence a little more.
3:31The royal couple will stop receiving public funds and have pledged
3:35to reimburse past expenses, including restoring a residence
3:40for the Duke and Duchess, who wanted to be able to live off their
3:44work and reside part of the year in Canada. While they are and always will be a part
3:49of the Royal Family for Queen Elizabeth II,
3:52they are no longer considered active members of the Royal
3:55Family and are released from their representational role.
3:58For Harry, the move also means giving up his
4:02official military engagement as Captain General of the Royal Navy.
4:08A position held for 65 years by Harry's grandfather before passing the torch.
4:13Thanks for listening to this podcast. We hope you liked it.
4:16I will now explain the keywords, the important words of the week in the news on the coronavirus.
4:24We talked about a case, saying that several cases had been detected. A case is a fact.
4:32It is a situation. Here we are talking about a case to denote
4:36situations of sick people that have been detected.
4:41We talked about the metropolis of Wuhan - a metropolis is a very big city.
4:47It is the main city of a region. We said the city has been quarantined. When it says quarantine,
4:56it means separating people from other people. It prevents them from going to other places.
5:02Usually, this is to prevent a disease from spreading. We talked about the coronavirus epidemic.
5:11An epidemic is a contagious disease that can be caught, which spreads among the population,
5:17among the people. We talked about the possible, eventual departure.
5:24It is an adjective which means that something may or may not happen.
5:28When we say their possible departure, it means that maybe they would have wanted to leave.
5:37We said the virus is spreading. The verb to spread means to spread, to propagate.
5:45The disease is spreading, it is spreading. It therefore affects more people.
5:51We used the verbs detect and detected, meaning that we discovered.
5:56We have found, therefore we have detected or detected the disease in people.
6:01We used the expression "hors de", it means outside.
6:05Something is happening outside of a place or setting.
6:09We can say outside of them to say outside a country, for example.
6:13"I live outside France" and it can also be used in the expression, for example
6:17"outside" to say that we no longer want to see someone. We used the word vehicle.
6:23A vehicle is a car, a truck, a scooter. It is something that serves to transport us.
6:29It is a means of locomotion. We said the police were taking the temperature.
6:35Taking the temperature means finding out about the heat or the cold around us or someone.
6:42So we can take the temperature of a room or a person. So we will check to what degree their body is.
6:49We spoke of the passengers, to speak of the passengers of a vehicle.
6:53It is a person who is transported by means of transport.
6:58So you can be a passenger in a car, a boat, or even a plane.
7:03We talked about the mask, saying that wearing a mask was mandatory.
7:08A mask is something you put on your face, either to disguise yourself - for example for Carnival -
7:14but also a mask can be put on to protect against disease so as not to catch it.
7:22We have also talked about the virus: a virus is a disease that spreads, like the coronavirus.
7:29In the news on escaped prisoners in Paraguay, we used the word to escape.
7:36It is a verb which means to flee, to leave, to escape.
7:41Usually, we run away because we want to avoid someone or a situation.
7:45Here they wanted to get out of prison. We said they escaped through a tunnel.
7:52A tunnel makes a passage in the ground. We talked about inmates. An inmate is a prisoner.
8:00That's what you call someone who is in prison, in detention. The tunnel has been dug.
8:07To dig is to make a hole. You can dig in the ground to make a tunnel and you can also, for example,
8:13dig a grave to bury someone, or dig the ground to make a cellar.
8:18We spoke of drug traffickers - a trafficker is a person who traffics
8:25something, who sells illegally, in a manner prohibited by law. Here, they sell drugs illegally.
8:34We talked about weapons. A weapon is a tool or an instrument
8:38that will be used to injure or kill someone. So we can talk about a firearm
8:43with a rifle, a revolver, but also a bladed weapon. It's gonna be a knife or a sword.
8:51We have talked about prison guards. A guard is the person who watches over
8:56a prison, a penitentiary, who watches over prisoners.
9:01We have said which tunnel was fitted out. "Fitted out"
9:05means to arrange a place, to put things in place in a space
9:09that can be arranged - an apartment, for example. We talked about lighting.
9:14Lighting is what makes it possible to have light.
9:17So here we said that the tunnel was laid out with lights. We talked about construction,
9:24so the construction of the tunnel - it means creating something.
9:29Often it's going to be a building, for example. So we can build, build a house.
9:36We talked about sanitary facilities. "Sanitary" is a word that is used to refer
9:40to both the toilet and the bathroom. The shower, the bathtub - these are the facilities for washing.
9:47For hygiene. We spoke of the fugitives. A fugitive is a person on the run who has escaped.
9:58The detainees become fugitives, because they came out of prison. And then we talked about a
10:04van - a van is a small truck. It is a vehicle between a car and a truck.
10:10Rather, it is a work vehicle that will be used in certain cases,
10:14for example to move into an apartment. Another word?
10:19We said these vans were set on fire. "Set on fire" is a verb which means to set something ablaze.
10:26We talked about the border between Paraguay and Brazil - so it's the line between two things.
10:34Generally, we use the word border to talk about a limit between two countries.
10:39It's a line that will separate them. We talked about capturing.
10:45So, in fact, it means taking someone or an animal prisoner. There, we want to capture the fugitives.
10:52In the news on Donald Trump, we talked about abortion.
10:56Abortion is the act of stopping your pregnancy when you are pregnant.
11:00Abortion can be natural or induced. In French we say IVG, the voluntary termination of pregnancy.
11:09So when we say that we are anti-abortion, "anti-" means we are against something.
11:16I am anti-capitalist, therefore anti-abortion.
11:20We can put the prefix "anti" in front of things we are against. We were talking about the election,
11:28the American election. An election is a vote to elect someone to represent us.
11:35We said Donald Trump was a businessman. He's a business man.
11:41This word is also used in French, although it is English.
11:44So, he is someone who will earn money from his professional activity. But this professional activity
11:50remains a little unclear for most people. We don't really know what he actually does for a job.
11:57We said Donald Trump was a billionaire. He's a very, very rich person who has billions.
12:06We said he made a 360-degree turn. So this expression means to completely change opinion.
12:16We told about his trial. So, a trial is when you go to court and a judge
12:21will render a decision, a judgment in relation to a situation.
12:26We talked about the impeachment of Donald Trump. An impeachment
12:30is a sanction which consists in depriving someone of their function.
12:34So, if he is king or president director, then it was the same for the director
12:38of the prison who was dismissed and had his function taken away from him. In the news,
12:44Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. We used the verb to give up, so they gave up their royal rights.
12:52So, it means voluntarily giving up something or a right. We said that they wished to take
13:00their independence, to take their independence.
13:04It means becoming more independent from someone or something. So we want to fend for ourselves.
13:11For example, we can say I took my independence at 18 years old.
13:15I have found a job and I am paying alone my rent. We told that it was going to pay off.
13:20So to repay is to give back money that you owe someone.
13:24We have said he was a Duke and she a Duchess. These are titles of nobility.
13:28Dukes and duchesses are just below the princes and princesses in the hierarchy of nobility.
13:35We talked about the verb "to reside" to say that he resides in Canada. It means to live, to inhabit.
13:42We can say, for example, I reside in Japan, I reside in France, etc.
13:49We talked about the Queen of England, so the queen is a ruler of royalty.
13:54It is the woman who rules a kingdom. We talked about passing the torch.
14:00It is an expression which means to cede one's function
14:03to someone, to entrust them with the rest of a task.
