0:00Hello and welcome to the Hello French press review! The podcast that immerses you in the news
0:05of the week to help you improve your French.
0:09On the front page for this week, from December 22 to 28, 2019.
0:12The Netherlands condemned by justice for climate inaction.
0:16A first worldwide success for environmental activists. Elections in Israel.
0:20Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wins his party's primary with 72.5% votes.
0:28He will represent Likud in March. Hong Kong. Violent clashes
0:33between pro-democracy activists and police take place in shopping
0:37malls on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the United States.
0:40A baby kidnapped in 1964 has just been found thanks to an online DNA analysis site.
0:47Unusual Christmas Eve in Belgium. A wolf suspected of having devoured
0:51a domestic kangaroo. To make their claims heard,
0:55more and more environmental associations are now appealing to justice.
1:00These associations had their first victory in the world this week. This Friday, December 20,
1:06the Dutch Supreme Court indeed condemned the state for climate inaction.
1:11Justice orders the Netherlands to reduce
1:14its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 compared to 1990.
1:20To deliver this verdict, the judges relied on the European Convention on Human Rights.
1:26Justice ruled that global warming endangers the right to life.
1:30However, a state must protect its citizens. For environmental activists around
1:35the world, this decision represents the hope that justice will also condemn
1:39their country and force it to act against global warming. In Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu did not even
1:46wait for the official results to announce his victory on Twitter.
1:50He won his party's primary with 72.5% votes.
1:55His opponent, Gideon Sa'ar, had little chance of winning against
1:59the current prime minister and party leader. 57,000 members of the Israeli
2:05right-wing party voted for this primary, or just under 50% of the members.
2:09Netanyahu, indicted a month ago for corruption, will
2:13therefore represent Likud for the March elections. The country, in a political stalemate, is
2:19organizing elections for the third time in less than a year.
2:22Clashes erupted in Hong Kong on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day between
2:26pro-democracy activists and riot police.
2:30The pro-Chinese power accused the rioters of having spoiled the holiday
2:33atmosphere in this region where many Christians live.
2:36If the situation has been very tense since June in the former British colony,
2:41the violence had calmed down for a month. Calls to launch punch operations at this end
2:47of year holiday period have however been launched by activists, especially via the Internet.
2:51The movement was launched six months ago against a bill
2:54that would allow extradition to mainland China. If the government has since backed down,
3:00opponents have extended their demands for more democracy and independence from China.
3:07The United States has been wondering where Paul Fronczak has been for more than 50 years.
3:12The outcome of this affair has just been revealed this week. This baby had been kidnapped the day
3:17after his birth by a woman disguised as a nurse in a hospital in Chicago.
3:22Several years ago, the DNA of one of the child's relatives
3:26was put on the various American genealogy sites. The family then hoped that Paul,
3:31or one of his children, would also deposit his DNA there. Hope turned into reality,
3:36since the DNA matches that of a 55-year-old man living in Michigan. A victory for his mother,
3:42now aged 80, and the genealogist who followed the case.
3:46Christmas Eve spoiled for these inhabitants of northern Belgium. While their domestic kangaroos
3:53were in their backyard, they were likely attacked by a wolf. One of the missing kangaroos
3:59certainly served as the wild wolf's festive meal. For the second kangaroo,
4:04more fear than harm - bitten in the ear, it is today very well. While footsteps were
4:10found near the property, police have not provided any further information.
4:15Thanks for listening to this podcast. We hope you liked it. I will now explain the key
4:20words, the important words of the week. In the news on the Netherlands,
4:25we used the term global warming. It is the phenomenon of
4:32temperature increase in the atmosphere and in the oceans.
4:35We also talked about greenhouse gas emissions. These are gases that are present in the atmosphere.
4:42Global warming is partly due to the increase in these gases.
4:47For example, cars emit CO2 and CO2 is a greenhouse gas. We also used,
4:55we had to use, the verb to condemn and the verb to coerce. Justice condemned the state.
5:02She punishes it. It therefore forces the State to put
5:07actions in place, that is to say it obliges it. It forces the state to act.
5:14We also used the term militant. An activist is someone who fights for a cause they think is right.
5:24In the news about the elections in Israel, we have used the word adversary.
5:31An adversary is a person who is generally opposed in a fight.
5:37Netanyahu is the sure opponent for the elections. We also talked about members.
5:43A member is a person who is a member of an organization. One can for example be a member
5:49or a member of a party, of a sports club, or of an association.
5:57We have said that he was charged with corruption.
6:01Corruption is when you use your power abusively in exchange for money or other benefits.
6:08We also used the expression dead end. In this context, a dead end is when a situation is hopeless,
6:16that it is difficult to resolve, the situation is stuck. The word can also be used
6:21to designate a dead end street. In Hong Kong news, we talked about clashes.
6:29These are violent confrontations, fights. In the same lexical field, we spoke of riots and rioters.
6:38Riots are demonstrations, usually with violence. Rioters are the people who riot.
6:48We also talked about Christians. Christians are people who adhere to the religion of Christianity.
6:55It is the religion of Jesus Christ. We have said that Hong Kong is a former British colony.
7:02A colony is territory occupied by another nation. It is therefore not independent from it.
7:10We used the expression punch operation. It is a sudden and unexpected operation
7:17which will mark the spirits. In the news on the missing child
7:20in the United States, we used the word denouement. The denouement is what ends a story.
7:28We said he was kidnapped by a woman disguised as a nurse. In disguise means she was wearing
7:34a costume, clothes to change her identity. We have talked about a genealogy site.
7:41Genealogy is the science of establishing family ties, of finding ancestors.
7:48The list of members of the same family. In the news on kangaroos in Belgium,
7:53we talked about Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is Christmas Eve, the evening of December 24th.
8:00We also talked about a wild wolf. Wild means that he has not been
8:05tamed, that he lives in freedom in the wild.
