Le rituel du goûter
In France, le goûter is truly considered a fourth meal. This meal takes place around 4:30 PM. This time of day is also known as "le quatre-heures" (literally "the four o'clock").
"Goûter" is also a verb, just like "déjeuner" or "dîner". Je goûte, tu goûtes, il goûte... Normally, it's children who goûtent or who prennent le goûter when they come home from school before doing their homework. However, many adults also have a goûter from time to time, rather than snacking throughout the day.
Traditionally, the French eat tartines or brioche at goûter time with, for example, pâte à tartiner (chocolate spread) or confiture (jam). Increasingly, other foods are making their way into le goûter: biscuits, fruit, yogurt, pastries, and more.
