A Statue of Liberty in Paris?

You certainly know the Statue of Liberty in New York. But did you know that its little sister is in Paris?

This statue was built at the same time as the original. It was given to France by the Committee of Americans in Paris in 1889 to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution. It sits on the Île aux Cygnes, not far from the Eiffel Tower. The statue faces New York and has its back to the Eiffel Tower.

In fact, this isn't the only replica of the Statue of Liberty you can see in Paris. There are actually six replicas in Paris - in museums, a park, a public square, and on the Île aux Cygnes. The real Statue of Liberty in New York was itself built in Paris and shipped across the Atlantic by boat.

The statue was a gift from France to the United States to celebrate the country's independence and to show its friendship.
